I guess we can officially say that it’s summer. Long, warm days is something I really love and enjoy. But give me anything above 25 degrees and I begin to melt like an ice lolly. My extremely pale body really can’t handle hot weather. What’s even worse is that I turn into a complete Sweaty Betty and it’s not pretty. We are talking sweat appearing on every inch of my body. I will spare you the details.
While I can’t control my sweatiness on the rest of my body, I thought that I just need to find something to stop the sweat (and smell) under my armpits. I have been using natural deodorants for years but nothing seemed to do the trick, even the once loved by me LAVANILA deodorants. Sure, they did smell nice but few hours later all I could smell was myself. Then, there was this whole craze over natural deodorant creams with baking soda in them. I was excited to read all the positive reviews about them, particularly one of the first ones – Soapwalla one. I was convinced that I finally found the solution to my stinky problem. Once it arrived I immediately put it on and guess what? It gave me the worst rash in my entire life. My armpits were pretty much on fire, to be more exact. Horrified, I later on read that the baking soda can be problematic for some people and I unfortunately was one of them. But I didn’t give up. I gave it another go, and another, and some few more and they all resulted in this awful rash. I was so disappointed that it didn’t work out for me.
So I had to go back to using LAVANILA natural deodorants again. Until the day when Meow Meow Tweet came up with a baking soda free deodorant. That was such a revelation for me. While the shipping from the US cost me an arm and a leg I was very giddy about finally using a natural deodorant that works and doesn’t irritate my armpits.
Meow Meow Tweet deodorant was pretty good. It didn’t irritate my sensitive skin, and did get rid of the smell, but I have to say that I wasn’t too impressed with its consistency. It just felt too thick and after a short time of not using it, it became very rubbery and impossible to use. So yet again I was on the hunt for something new.
At the beginning of 2016 I kindly received a package of goodies from Petal&Post. It was full of fabulous things, including a bamboo toothbrush and a natural deodorant by Leaves of Trees! I immediately loved the packaging – a little metal tube which allows you to easily squeeze out as much deodorant as you like. I also loved the smell – very refreshing. What I didn’t like was that it included baking soda. I knew this wouldn’t go well with my armpits. I still had to give it a go and while it didn’t irritate my skin as much as the Soapwalla did, the slight irritation was still there (mind you, I wax my armpits, so it wasn’t because of shaving). Then, in July during the amazing Clean Cult event, the very lovely Tamara told me about The Natural Deodorant Co. and that they also make a great deodorant without baking soda in it. She also suggested I should layer my deodorant to avoid irritation. So first apply the one without the baking soda, and then the one with it. What a brilliant idea, I thought!
I got myself The Natural Deodorant Co. Gentle Deodorant at the event and I was excited to give this method suggested by Tamara a go. Can I just say how grateful I am for that advice? It actually worked! I first put a thin layer of The Natural Deodorant Co, and then Leaves of Trees one over it. No irritation at all! No smell whatsoever. It completely blew me away. The Natural Deodorant Co. has a very subtle smell, which is great because the Leaves of Trees one has an incredible smell, which becomes even stronger and nicer once it’s on.
I just love the consistency of both The Natural Deodorant Co. and Leaves of Trees. Both are super creamy, spreadable and take less than a minute to rub in. Plus, they don’t stain my shirts. But obviously the best part of them is that they saved me from the embarrassment during my last summer holidays in Italy. No smelliness even under the very hot Italian sun. They will definitely keep me smelling nice and fresh during this summer as well.
What can I say – I found my perfect deodorant duo.
